We all love obsessing over those outlier numbers—the 160+ IQ scores that make us feel like we're playing checkers while they're playing 4D chess. It is a massive dopamine hit to think that a specific number on a standardized test can encapsulate the entirety of human genius. But if we look at the history of these "exceptional minds," the data tells a much weirder story than the textbooks do.

High IQ is essentially just a measure of pattern recognition and processing speed. It’s a specialized tool, like a high-performance engine in a car. If you put a Formula 1 engine inside a tractor, you aren't going to harvest corn any faster; you're just going to blow the engine or tear up the field. This is exactly what happens when we treat IQ as a complete definition of intelligence rather than just one specific metric in a much larger AI-like architecture.

The gap between logic and execution

In a real-world deployment of intelligence, there is a massive delta between "knowing" and "doing." I see this constantly in the AI space too. You can have an LLM with a massive parameter count and incredible reasoning capabilities, but if the prompt engineering is garbage or the agent lacks a functional feedback loop, the output is useless.

The same applies to humans. Many people with astronomical IQs struggle with what we might call "operational intelligence":

  • Social Calibration: Understanding the unspoken nuances of human interaction (something no logic gate can perfectly simulate).

Intelligence is a multi-modal system

If we were building an LLM agent from scratch, we wouldn't just optimize for a single benchmark. We would look at tool use, long-term memory, reasoning, and instruction following. Human intelligence should be viewed through a similar lens.

An exceptional mind isn't just a fast processor; it's a complex workflow. You need the raw compute (IQ), but you also need the specialized training (education), the reliable memory (experience), and the ability to interface with the environment (social and physical skills).

When we celebrate the "highest IQ," we are essentially celebrating the highest raw clock speed. But in the real world, a well-optimized, mid-range processor with a perfect software stack will outperform a supercomputer running a broken script every single day. We need to stop looking at IQ as the finish line and start seeing it as just the baseline hardware specs.
