Why a custom model matters for Apple
For a while, the assumption was that Apple would just plug into whatever local LLM was most compliant and capable. However, the "black box" nature of third-party models makes it hard to maintain that polished, integrated feel Apple is known for. A custom-trained model allows them to fine-tune the AI workflow to be more consistent with Siri and the rest of the ecosystem. It also mitigates the risk of being overly dependent on a single vendor's API, which can be volatile given the current geopolitical climate.
Working with Alibaba is a strategic move. Alibaba has the massive compute infrastructure and the localized data expertise that Apple needs to ensure the model actually understands the nuances of the Chinese language and cultural context. It's essentially a hybrid approach: Apple provides the architecture and the specific product requirements, while Alibaba provides the "horsepower" and local grounding to get the model up to speed.
The technical trade-offs
Training a model from scratch or heavily fine-tuning a base model for a specific region involves a few key challenges:
