EU Forces Google to Open Android to AI Rivals
This is a massive blow to Google's "walled garden" strategy. For years, the seamless integration between Android and Google Assistant has been a primary moat, keeping users locked into the Gemini ecosystem. By forcing Google to share critical system capabilities, the EU is essentially trying to manufacture a level playing field for players like OpenAI.
From a technical standpoint, allowing third-party AIs to trigger system-level actions via voice is a game changer. It transforms the OS from a Google delivery vehicle into a neutral platform. While 2027 feels far away in AI years, this sets a precedent that "system access" is the new battleground. If OpenAI or other challengers can integrate deeply into the OS, Google's search dominance could erode much faster than they anticipated.
