EU Forces Google to Open Android and Search Data
This is a massive shift in how the "gatekeeper" model works. For years, Google has leveraged the tight integration between Android and Gemini to create a seamless ecosystem that's nearly impossible for third-party AI assistants to penetrate. By forcing "equal access," the EU is essentially trying to strip away that home-field advantage.
From a technical perspective, giving competitors the same system-level hooks as Gemini could lead to a much more diverse AI landscape on mobile. However, I suspect Google will try to implement this in the most minimal way possible to satisfy the DMA without giving away the "secret sauce." Still, the threat of a 10% global revenue fine is too large to ignore. We are moving toward a future where the OS is less of a walled garden and more of a utility, which is a huge win for smaller AI players trying to find a foothold.
