OpenAI shouldn't have taken custom GPT creation away from Plus and Pro users

Moving custom GPT creation exclusively to Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces is a massive step backward for individual power users. If you are paying for a Plus or Pro subscription, you should still be able to build and publish your own GPTs without being forced into an organizational plan.

Why this restriction hurts individual workflows

The ability to create a custom GPT is one of the strongest selling points for a paid personal account. Many of us use these for professional tasks, but we aren't necessarily operating within a corporate structure. Freelancers, independent developers, consultants, and entrepreneurs rely on these specialized bots to handle specific parts of their daily workflow.

By locking this feature behind workspace-tier plans, OpenAI is ignoring the reality of the modern independent professional. There is no logical reason why a single-user Pro account should be barred from a feature that was previously available, other than a push to migrate users toward more expensive Business tiers.

The gap between Plus/Pro and Business plans

For someone who only needs a custom GPT for their own personal productivity, moving to a Business plan feels like an unnecessary overhead. The core issue is that this isn't a product improvement; it's a removal of a capability from a paying customer.

• Business/Enterprise/Edu: Retain full creation and publishing capabilities.

When a company removes a feature that users are already paying for and moves it to a higher price bracket, it feels more like a greedy pricing strategy than a strategic product move. If the goal was to improve the ecosystem, they would have added new features to the Business plan rather than stripping existing ones from the personal plans.

How to handle the current setup

Since the creation tool is now tied to organizational workspaces, individual users are left in a weird spot. If you've already built GPTs, you can still use them, but the inability to iterate or create new ones for new projects is a major bottleneck. For those of us who don't have a company or school email to justify a workspace, the only path forward is to pay for a more expensive plan just to get back the functionality we already had.

OpenAI needs to restore this feature to Plus and Pro accounts. The flexibility of creating a tailored AI assistant is exactly why people subscribe in the first place, and restricting it to "organizations" is an overly narrow definition of who actually needs this technology.
