OpenAI’s move to block custom GPT creation for Plus and Pro subscribers forces solo users into costly workarounds

The decision to restrict custom GPT development to Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans removes a core tool for freelancers, developers, and consultants who rely on these models for daily operations. Previously, Plus and Pro subscribers could build and share their own GPTs—a feature now locked behind organizational accounts, even for those who don’t need team collaboration.

This shift creates an unfair divide where individual professionals face unnecessary barriers. Freelancers, for example, might use a custom GPT to automate client reporting or code generation, yet now lack the ability to update or create new models without upgrading to a Business plan. The justification for this change—pushing users toward higher-tier subscriptions—ignores the fact that many paid subscribers already pay for features they now can’t access.

The disparity is clear:

• Plus/Pro accounts can no longer create or publish new custom GPTs.
• Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans retain full access.

OpenAI’s action feels less like a product improvement and more like a pricing strategy. If the goal was to enhance the platform, the company could have added new capabilities to Business plans instead of removing existing ones from personal tiers.

For users already invested in custom GPTs, the situation is frustrating. Existing models remain usable, but the inability to modify or build new ones limits future projects. Without access to a workspace email, the only solution is to switch to a more expensive plan—effectively penalizing long-time subscribers for a feature they previously had.

OpenAI should restore custom GPT creation for Plus and Pro accounts. The ability to design personalized AI tools is a primary reason users choose these subscriptions, and restricting it to "organizations" excludes those who benefit most from flexibility.
