GitHub's menu icon turned into a pancake emoji – anyone else?

For the past few days when I open GitHub, I've been staring at a stack of pancakes with a pat of butter where the usual hamburger menu should be. At first I thought my browser had corrupted a font or something, but nope – it's persistent across incognito windows and different machines. The three horizontal lines are just gone, replaced by a literal pancake emoji.

I'm not a power user by any stretch, just someone who clones repos and submits the occasional pull request. But this change is so weird that I had to look into it. A quick search doesn't show any official announcement. No blog post, no tweet from GitHub's account. Nothing. So what's going on?

My first thought was that this could be an A/B test – maybe they're experimenting with more expressive icons to make the interface feel friendlier. But switching from an established UI pattern to an emoji seems like a big leap. Then I considered an internal joke that accidentally went live. Or maybe someone managed to sneak this in as an Easter egg, given that developers have long called the hamburger menu a "pancake menu" informally. Taking that name literally would be a funny meta-gag.

The timing is curious too. If it were April 1st, I'd dismiss it as a prank. But we're nowhere near that. Could be a misconfigured asset pipeline? I remember once seeing a dev forum where someone jokingly replaced all icons with emoji in a style guide demo – maybe a similar thing happened here.

I've seen a few other people mention it on Reddit and Twitter, so it's not just me. Some say it appears only on certain repository pages, others see it across the whole site. Still not clear whether it's a feature flag or a global rollout.

Functionally, the menu itself still works – clicking the pancake reveals the same navigation links as before. But it's disorienting. I keep double-checking that I'm on the real GitHub and not a parody site.

If anyone here knows more – maybe a GitHub employee lurking – I'd love an explanation. Is this a temporary test, a permanent change, or just a bug that's too funny to fix quickly? Either way, it's definitely making my daily git routine a bit more entertaining.

Oh, I've been curious about that feature! Have you tried it out yet? I'm hoping it streamlines the workflow.

Honestly, with GitHub's track record lately, I'm more inclined to think it's a bug than an easter egg. Have they confirmed this anywhere?

Neat. I've been meaning to try stacked PRs—this might be the nudge I needed. Does the easter egg just appear randomly?

Is it really hunger or just boredom? I always think I want pancakes but then remember I don't even like them that much.
