The Hardware Trap

In the eyes of most investors, their "AI" is likely viewed as specialized automation for telemetry, orbital mechanics, and autonomous docking—critical for operations, but not necessarily a scalable software product that generates recurring AI-driven revenue.
When we talk about AI workflows in the current market, we usually mean LLMs, generative agents, or predictive analytics that can be sold as a service. SpaceX's AI is internalized. It's the "secret sauce" that makes their landings possible, but since it isn't a standalone product, it doesn't get the "AI premium" that a company like NVIDIA or OpenAI enjoys.
AI vs. Automation
There is a massive distinction between "AI" as a marketing term and "AI" as an engineering tool. SpaceX uses incredibly sophisticated machine learning for things like:
- Predictive Maintenance: Analyzing sensor data to prevent Falcon 9 failures.
- Starlink Routing: Dynamically managing laser links between satellites to optimize data flow.

From a technical standpoint, this is a masterclass in real-world AI deployment. But from a financial standpoint, this is just "operational efficiency." Investors aren't seeing a "Claude Code" equivalent for space; they are seeing a company that is very good at not losing its rockets.
The Missing AI Narrative
If SpaceX wanted to shift this valuation, they would need to pivot how they present their software stack. Right now, the world sees them as the "trucking company of space." To get an AI-driven valuation, they would need to demonstrate how their data moat—the sheer volume of orbital and atmospheric data they possess—could be turned into a platform.
Imagine a scenario where SpaceX provides the foundational "Space OS" for every other satellite operator, powered by an LLM agent that manages orbital traffic and collision avoidance. That is where the value lies. Until then, the $100 billion mark is just a reflection of their dominance in launch services, with the AI components treated as mere overhead.
It's a strange paradox: they are likely one of the most advanced users of AI in the physical world, yet their valuation reflects a total lack of confidence in AI as a primary value driver for the firm.
