Microsoft's Copilot: Massive Hype vs. Reality Check
According to recent data, despite being baked into Windows 11 and Office, only about 4.5% of Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers are actually paying for the premium Copilot service. Even more shocking? Of those paying users, only 20% to 30% use it weekly. When you do the math, the weekly active users for the paid service represent just about 1% of the total M365 user base.
It seems there is a massive gap between "having the feature" and "finding it indispensable." Interestingly, the free version—Copilot Chat—is seeing much higher engagement. This tells me that while people are curious about AI, they aren't yet convinced that the premium version justifies the extra cost in their daily workflow.
In my opinion, Microsoft is at a crossroads. An internal memo even noted that Copilot "must prove its value." We are moving past the "wow" phase of generative AI and entering the "utility" phase. If Microsoft can't turn this novelty into a core part of the professional toolkit, they might struggle to justify the premium pricing.
What do you guys think? Are you actually using the paid Copilot for work, or is it just another sidebar you ignore?
