Waymo Hits a Bump in SF
It is a bit ironic that we are betting the future of urban mobility on autonomous vehicles, yet they remain completely tethered to the reliability of aging city infrastructure. While the AI driving the cars is incredibly sophisticated, the operational layer is clearly still fragile.
This outage highlights a critical vulnerability: robotaxis aren't just vehicles; they are massive data consumers that rely on a seamless connection between the car, the cloud, and local charging/support hubs. When the grid flickers, the entire fleet essentially goes blind or becomes immobile. For Waymo to truly scale and move beyond "controlled" environments, they need to solve for these infrastructure gaps or develop better fail-safes that allow them to operate independently of local power fluctuations. Until then, the "future of transport" is still at the mercy of the local utility company.
