Role overview
Software Engineer on the sBTC team at Stacks Labs, working fully remotely to build and maintain sBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset that brings BTC into smart contracts and is secured by a decentralized network of signers. A hands-on engineering role with ownership over security-sensitive protocol, signer software and tooling that move Bitcoin in and out of the Stacks blockchain.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain and test the sBTC protocol and its signer software.
- Design and implement core peg mechanics — deposits and withdrawals — and the threshold-signing coordination that secures the sBTC wallet.
- Ensure the Bitcoin–Stacks peg is secure and correct so deposits and withdrawals move real Bitcoin reliably, including under adversarial and edge-case conditions rather than only the happy path.
- Implement rigorous monitoring and testing to meet the security and performance requirements of a system safeguarding real Bitcoin.
- Design and implement supporting tools and utilities such as CLI clients, applications that move sBTC on or off the Stacks blockchain, and utilities for monitoring signer health, benchmarking or debugging.
- Help keep the sBTC signer network healthy, observable and resilient in the presence of faults, network partitions and delays.
- Collaborate with other teams on new product features across the Stacks blockchain, including applications that move sBTC on or off Stacks and protocol integrations.
- Work closely with internal teams and external partners, communicating design decisions and trade-offs clearly.
- Maintain a codebase built for scale and change through scalable architecture, disciplined refactoring and thorough testing.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience building and shipping products.
- Strong, demonstrated engineering fundamentals, including scalability, architecture, refactoring, algorithms and testing.
- Experience building and operating security- or reliability-critical backend systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both internal teams and external partners.
- Ability to operate autonomously in a fully remote role.
Application conditions
- Fully remote role with a globally distributed team.
- Remote does not imply worldwide eligibility; residency, time zone, language and work authorization requirements must be confirmed on the original listing page.
- Applications are submitted through Rippling ATS via the link in the listing.
- Employment type is not specified in the source listing.
- Stacks Labs states it is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, disability, national origin, protected veteran status, age, or any other status protected by law.
Preferred qualifications
- Expertise in Rust, the primary language of the sBTC codebase.
- Working knowledge of blockchains, distributed systems, peer-to-peer systems and decentralization.
- Familiarity with the Bitcoin protocol.
- Knowledge of multi-party cryptography.
- Experience testing distributed systems for behaviors in the presence of faults, network partitions and network delays.
Compensation and benefits
- Competitive compensation including a $160,000-$200,000 USD base salary.
- Stacks (STX) tokens, the native cryptocurrency of the Stacks network.
- Comprehensive health coverage and free life and disability insurance.
- Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave.
- Monthly stipends for a home office or co-working space of choice.
- Annual learning and development stipend.
- An open vacation policy.

As a Software Engineer on the sBTC team at Stacks Labs, you'll help build sBTC — a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset that brings BTC into smart contracts, secured by a decentralized network of signers.
You'll operate autonomously in a fully remote role, collaborating with a talented, globally distributed team to design and implement the protocol, signer software, and tooling that move Bitcoin in and out of the Stacks blockchain. This is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership over some of the most critical, security-sensitive infrastructure in the Stacks ecosystem.
Outcomes You'll Drive
- A secure, correct peg between Bitcoin and Stacks
Deposits and withdrawals move real Bitcoin reliably and safely, backed by threshold-signing coordination that holds up under adversarial and edge-case conditions, not just the happy path.
- Signer software that performs under real-world conditions
The sBTC signer network stays healthy, observable, and resilient in the presence of faults, network partitions, and delays — because it's securing real Bitcoin, not test funds.
- Tooling that makes sBTC easier to build on, monitor, and debug
CLI clients, monitoring utilities, and benchmarking tools give internal teams and external partners clear visibility into signer health and peg operations, reducing the time it takes to diagnose and resolve issues.
- A codebase built for scale and change
Strong engineering fundamentals — scalable architecture, disciplined refactoring, thorough testing — mean the sBTC protocol can absorb new features and integrations without accumulating risk.
What You'll Do
Core sBTC Protocol Engineering
- Contribute to developing, maintaining, and testing the sBTC protocol and its signer software.
- Design and implement core peg mechanics — deposits and withdrawals — and the threshold-signing coordination that secures the sBTC wallet.
- Implement rigorous and thorough monitoring and testing to meet the stringent security and performance requirements of a system safeguarding real Bitcoin.
- Design and implement supporting tools and utilities, such as CLI clients, applications that support moving sBTC on or off the Stacks blockchain, and utilities for monitoring signer health, benchmarking, or debugging.
- Collaborate with other teams on new product features across the Stacks blockchain, including applications that support moving sBTC on or off the Stacks blockchain and protocol integrations.
- Work closely with internal teams and external partners, communicating design decisions and trade-offs clearly as sBTC integrates with new products and partner systems.
